Taylor Takes Charge A Portland Court Adventure Charles Utley Books

I like school daze comedies, as a general rule. I am not, however, very often particularly keen on the heroes of such books. Superior, supercilious, simpering, devious - it is just so hard to come up with a twelve year old Jeeves-style schoolboy with not only the right stuff, but also the right combination of stuff. Charles Utley has done us all a great service by creating Taylor, and then has upped his level of achievement by surrounding Taylor with an exceptional supporting cast.

Taylor is a natural leader, a philosopher, a boy-of-action, and a boy's own sort of hero, with enough natural charm and boyish authenticity to appeal to any reader.

I will not carry on further though, as it appears it would be unfair. I found this book many years ago as a free Kindle offering on Amazon. I have just now read it. (Lots to do; lots to do.) The book no longer is listed as available in Kindle at any price. It does not appear to be currently in print. It seems to be a complete mystery to librarians everywhere. All I can find is a few used paperback copies listed on Amazon at exorbitant prices, (which happens when used book listings are abandoned and pricing robots add a few cents to their cost every day).

So, not wishing to cause torment by further describing for you the unattainable delights of this book, I would just commend this book to you as exactly the sort of book you should be looking for at odd and out of the way booksellers. Good luck.

Taylor Takes Charge A Portland Court Adventure Charles Utley Books Reviews

This is a good read. It had me smiling and even laughing out loud on a crowded train home from work in the rush hour. I am looking forward to the next of Taylor's adventures.
There is a slightly old-fashioned tone to this novel, and very entertaining. Set in a private boarding school, the teachers are mostly a bit strange, and so are some of the things that happen. Good for a chuckle, and an accomplished piece of writing.
This is one of those unusual books that readers aged 8 to 108 will find totally absorbing and that will, embarrassingly, make you laugh out loud involuntarily as you make your way to work or school. Charles Utley has created that rare thing a world in which children and adults can luxuriate in an escapist fantasy but that is also thrilling, dramatic and - yes - even frightening at times. It is a world that never really existed and yet you can, whole-heartedly, believe it existed. More importantly, you want it to have existed. This is the best secret on - the book that you will be saying "I was one of the original discoverers of this book". Look no further for that "difficult" Christmas present - you have found it.
Thank you, Charles Utley, for producing one of the best books I have read in recent times. Whilst aimed at children, it brought back so many memories of my childhood. Not that I went to a prep school, but I loved reading Jennings when I was growing up, and this really reminded me of those happy times.

Mr Utley has given us a great character in Taylor, as well as all the minor players in what is a first class romp through times gone by. I would love to think that modern-day children will enjoy it as much as us middle-aged children undoubtedly will.

I hope there is another one on its way soon, before Taylor leaves to go on to great things in his life.
Take a shopworn setting like Portland Court Preparatory School for Boys, an eighteen year old, newly-minted school master named Ben Glossop, a lovely young Under-Matron named Sarah Wilton, mix in a loopy band of kidnappers, a tipsy collection of senior school masters, a Matron nicknamed "The Elephant" and a 12 year old boy named Taylor who is the real Head Master, and you have the recipe for one of the funniest comic adventures I've had the pleasure of reading since P. G. Wodehouse laid down his pen in 1975. From start to finish, it is marvelous fun.

Charles Utley, a London barrister, is a wonderful story teller, and Taylor Takes Charge is a wonderful book that you will read over and over again. Watch for the sequel, which I am told, will appear `soon'. Is Charles Utley starting a series of Portland Court novels? Oh, I hope he is. For sure he's got a fan in me.
When Ben Glossop arrives at Portland Court prep school as a junior master he quickly realises it is not a run-of-the mill establishment.

For one thing the other masters are all quite elderly, work-shy and constantly inebriated which results in Glossop getting far more duties than he envisaged but he copes; aided by glamourous under-matron Sarah Wilton.

What Glossop realises early on is that everyone seems to defer to a twelve year old boy named Taylor.

When Samantha Watson becomes a pupil at Portland following a failed kidnap attempt the plot thickens. When Sam is kidnapped for rreeal everyone looks to Taylor to sort it all out and so he does despite being hindered by the masters and Matron.

Will Taylor succeed in rescuing Sam? And will Ben ever get to the bottom of who appears to be watching his every move?

This is a simply delightful school caper infused with wit and imagination. I shall definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by Charles Utley. MY only complaint about this one being that it is too short.
