I've been a fan of 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' since I initially encountered it in high school. Add in a few re-reads over the years, a rather disturbingly atmospheric film featuring Johnny Depp, a few modern fictional spin-offs of the legend in books, and most recently, the truly remarkable series, Sleepy Hollow, starring Tom Mison. I have a deep and abiding love of this legend, so when Audible offered a free audio of '...Sleepy Hollow', narrated by Tom Mison, I was seriously excited. He did not disappoint. Absolutely a gorgeous way to re-experience this classic tale, and Mison's accent and lyrical mode of speech was perfect for the subject material. I'm not really an 'audio book' person, per say, but I can tell you that I enjoyed this more than any of the others I've listened to. Cannot recommend this one highly enough, and at less than two hours, it was a quick, thrilling way to spend an afternoon.

Oh, and in case anyone else is hunting... there apparently is no kindle version that will allow you to whispersync with this audio. Crossing fingers they create one in the future, as this seems like it would be a great one to listen and read simultaneously.

Highly recommended for those who love audiobooks, and even for those who aren't particularly drawn to them. Everyone should experience this classic as Mison delivers it. Perfection!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic that everyone should read at least once, but this version received only 2 stars from me due to the *advertisements* present in the middle of a paragraph. I mean, really? Whoring out your website in the middle of a sentence... It is as much of a distraction as having a battle between two angry leopards take place right next to my head as I read. And while the addition of vintage illustrations is nice, the formatting blows goats on a windy day. However, if one cannot find a paper or free version of the book, it is still better than not reading the story at all.

Edit The 'vintage' illustrations seem to be images taken from typing 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' into a search engine. One of them even comes from the old Disney adaptation of the story.
This book is an October tradition for me.

I love book traditions.  As a kid, I knew the story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, but I had never read the book until Audible gave it away to its subscribers in 2014.  It's about a scrawny school teacher who falls in love with the wealthy Katrina Von Tassel and begin to woo her - even though she is already being courted by Brom, one of the rowdy boys of the town.    Fortunately for Brom, Crane is run out of town by the apparition of the Headless Horseman.

Tom Mison's reading is brilliant.

As I was listening to it this year (the audiobook is very short), it occurred to me that even though the rich descriptions are lovely and I adore the character quirks of this classic folk tale, what I REALLY love is Tom Mison's voice.  He played Ichabod Crane in Fox's Sleepy Hollow which was sort of a hot mess (I watched all four seasons and loved it) and he read the whole thing so perfectly.  It was brilliant of Audible to bring him in to do it.

Sleepy Hollow is a must-read folktale classic.

I'm a New Englander, so this story really hits home for me.  The description of the little sleeping valleys between mountains and cities still holds true today, even though the story takes place in New York.  There's a rustic old world charm to the tale that makes it delightful.  It's not scary in the least, even though it is a ghost story.  It's just a fun little yarn about a superstitious man and the shadows under the moon.

I love it.

I’ve been a big fan of the Sleepy Hollow TV show ever since it originally aired (one of the few shows I’ve actually watched from the beginning) so when I heard that one of the stars of the TV show Tom Mison narrated The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for a free Audible audiobooks, I immediately went to download it. (I mean, have we heard his voice, friends?)

Obviously I have a basic understand of what THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW is about but I’ve never actually read the original book. For whatever reason, we always used to watch the cartoon around Halloween-time when I was in elementary school so I was pretty well-versed on how it went, but since I was getting a free audiobook, I figured now would be a good time to listen to this classic and actually get the original story written by Irving.

As excited as I was to listen to Tom Mison narrate the book, I have to say I was less than impressed. True, Washington Irving had a fantastic way at describing things but I felt like that was about 75% of the book. I had great visuals on what the characters looked like, what the setting looked like, and how food tasted/smelled/looked, but there was very little plot to the book and that was a bit frustrating. I was honestly over halfway done before any real plot even began to take shape and the ending was a bit of a let down. (Not like I didn’t know how it ended but there have been so many adaptations that I didn’t know which ones were the most accurate.) Overall, it was just a very dull story and the action didn’t really happen until the very end and it really wasn’t much.

Actually, the thing that I enjoyed the most was my personal connections to the legend. I really enjoyed remembering watching the cartoon as a kid and the feelings connected to it as well as pinpointing spots in the original story to plot lines in the Sleepy Hollow TV show. I love what the writers are doing with the TV show and expanding the legend into what I really hoped it would be when I picked up the audiobook.

The narration was quite good too. I just love British male narrators and Tom Mison has an excellent voice. I felt like his diction was a tiny bit overdone at times, but it was very pleasant to listen to for an hour and a half. If I’m listening to a slightly dull story, at least it was from a good narrator.
