Mrs McGinty Dead A Hercule Poirot Mystery Agatha Christie Hugh Fraser 9781572707313 Books

A real classic, Mrs Christie keeps one guessing until the end, this one moves pretty fast, murderer turned out to be someone not really on the radar too much until right at the end. Poirot of course figures it out. Why do people not write mysteries like these anymore?..I guess because no one is a genius as AG was. In Poirot she created a character for the ages, that's for sure. I have read them all now since Affair at Styles, #1, going to finish them all.

Mrs McGinty Dead A Hercule Poirot Mystery Agatha Christie Hugh Fraser 9781572707313 Books Reviews

A classic British mystery by the master of such, Agatha Christie! I enjoyed the escapades of her funny Belgian detective, his friendships, complaints, and intricate thoughts. Christie is great at creating fun characters in cozy settings. I enjoyed this as a visit to a small English town, even with murder on someone's mind.
I belong to a mystery book club and therefore I love reading a good mystery. I ordered this as a book on tape for a long commute to and from work. I even listened to it twice thinking perhaps I had missed something. But alas I didn't miss a thing the first time. The voice on the CD was awful, whiney and without assertiveness so it left me mimicking her child-like voice. But in addition to that, I was so nauseated by the weak character of Nina Reilly and her lack of intelligence and good judgment; I wanted to kick myself for listening to this drivel. Not only were the characters weak, but the plot, the dialog and the ending pathetic and frustrating. This was not a mystery. This was an exercise in tolerance. Not only was Nina Reilly a weak character and pathetic, but so was Collier and Jim Strong. Accomplished Attorney at Law, Nina Reilly was akin to a manikin; robotic and predictable. Collier and Jim Strong; well let's just say I could have cared less about either one of them. They were cardboard men without any substance. Who would want either one of them?
I wanted to read (or listen to in this case) this book because I was interested in reading this author's next book, "Dreams of the Dead". But I am now rethinking that posture.
I found it humiliating as a woman to read about a character supposedly smart and accomplished portrayed as being so stupid and ill-fit to this profession. As for the romantic scenes, (and don't get me wrong, I am not a prude and a little romance can ignite a great connection to the characters), they were like watching two teenagers with raging hormones. It was not romantic, it was disgusting. Mature romance and love is stimulating and exciting. This was not.
All in all very disappointing, and lest I say it again, pathetic attempt at a mystery, romance, characterization, plot and dialog. Don't waste your time. Instead write your own book. Trust me it would be better than this one. The author should perhaps stay with mystery or go with romance, but mixing the two in this novel did not work. It fell as flat as the cardboard characters in this read.
The only mystery here is how the author got this published.
When I first discovered, Nina Teiley mysteries I was ecstatic. Loved a single mom heoriene whose weapon was the law, respect for its entricadies to protect the innocents. After devouring 6 of her books, I saw some patterns emerging which I truely dislike. One is author's fascination with big money. Almost all stories inyroduce multi million dollar clients. Oh please. Second more serious crime they commit is vigilante justice theme that emerges in all stories towards evil characters that develop thru the course of the story, or appear as a shocker towards the end. Yet they get annihiliated. I would invite authors for a serious self reflection.
I've read 6 of the Nina Reilly books (one out of sequence). I like the authors' writing style, the balance between Nina's professional and personal struggles and dynamics, plot development and most of the character development, I find myself increasingly irritated by Nina's character and more unlikable with every book I read. I keep reading because of the story lines, and I keep hoping she'll grow on me. However, this book disappointed me. In real life, I realize there are people who are career driven to the exclusion of all else, who are impulsive, have blind spots and make poor judgments. We are all flawed. But the combination of those flaws in Nina Reilly just annoy me no end. The way she uses Paul, blowing hot and cold, while not calculating, leaves me cold. He's a convenient tool for her when she needs him professionally or sexually but she exhibit little caring for him outside of her own needs. In this book, I find her rushing into a marriage with Collier, despite the conflict of interest and ethical dilemmas, to be the mark of an unstable, insecure person (she goes from being independent and self-reliant to "I need to be married right now....a man to complete me" mentality). While others may see her as vulnerable, I just see her as weak and overly impulsive. For someone driven by her career, I find this lapse of judgment in the middle of a case involving Collier to be incredulous. What finally turned me off completely was despite both she and Collier knowing this guy is a psychopath and bent on hurting Nina through her loved ones, and despite have a sheriff's deputy to guard them, and resolving to stay in their cabin over the weekend under safety of cover,, just because Bob wants to get out in the snow, they just all impulsively decide to throw caution to the wind, and go merrily out into the wilderness to frolic in the snow. It wasn't just impulsive, it was stupid to the point of insanity. The fact that Collier died as a result of this foolishness......I was just disgusted. Just came away thinking the stupid bitch got what she deserved. It left me with a hollow, dissatisfied feeling, with a total lack of respect for the grief she brought upon herself and others because of her own recklessness and disregard. Yes, most of us can live in denial, as demonstrated by Philip Strong, but his blind spots, along with Nina's, brought a host of devastation that was completely preventable. I may be the only person developing a marked distaste for who Nina Reilly is, but I'm going to take a break in continuing with the series. At some point I hope the authors decide to take her on a path of growth where she learns from her mistakes, instead of continuing to make these egregious mistakes. She hasn't been a very good mother or friend or sister or lover. Totally self absorbed in her cases, but wanting and needing everyone to rally around her, despite her neglect of their needs.
