The Last Centurion John Ringo Books

This story holds up surprisingly well. It;s the first thing by John Ringo I've ever read, and it made me an instant fan.

The protagonist is a soldier stuck in the middle east, in change of a base the US military basically forgets due to enormous troubles at home: a plague and severe global climate change that our government overreacts to and makes worse. How he manages to acquit his duties honorably and come home from the Middle East is a novel in and of itself. But then he goes on to try and heal the damage at home, before any more of his countrymen die needlessly at the hands of idiot bureaucrats. Farms all across the country have been disrupted at a time when food output is critical, and the army as to eat first so it can go out and help the citizenry. Fascinating read.

The Last Centurion John Ringo Books Reviews

Not a book for libs who lack testicular fortitude. If you have a conservative outlook and/or you're a military vet, this book was written for you! As usual, John Ringo's writing and story building is excellent. This particular novel adds a higher level of retrospection and social analysis that he's typically more subtle about. I'll probably read this book several dozen more times over the years. There's nothing like it.
This is a great book to read. Has very valid points on trust. I recommend this book and author to everyone.
I will admit I like John Ringo's work...except his fantasy books...I'm not into fantasy. His military SF and possible future stuff is every bit as good as some of the long time writers out there. I really liked this book and, no spoilers, it always comes down to the man or woman who has the biggest..er...um...gonads that wins the day. In the spirit of "Independance Day" he brings larger than life characters into your face. You discover that they are brave...and opinionated, bigoted, lazy, mean-spirited, masoginist, narcisistic, self-centered, and horny. He doesn't make them out to be these perfect heroic beings but flawed humans that sometimes win because they are too stupid or sturbborn to give up. This story's main character embodies some, heck, most of those characteristics. He stomps his way through situations that would give most people pause. He makes deals like an egyption trader and doesn't mind backing them up with firepower. The only 'complaint' was the segway from desert combat to manning an 'information' desk at the pentagon...but since a third of the story revolves around the kind of 'help' he dispenses I can forgive the author. Good book, good read, and just the right length for a rainy weekend...Cheers!

I got this in hardback because I am going to DragonCon 2012 and Mr. Ringo is going to be there doing autographs...I already have this in paperback.
Huge fan of John Ringo and his Posleen Series (Legacy of the Aldenata). I thought I would give this one a try based on that, and I was not disappointed. A few things caught my attention (being in the Army), but you can tell the author has military experience of his own. I have purchased several copies of this book because I keep making the mistake of loaning it out and it never gets returned.
It's not so much a combat action piece as it is an interesting thought based angle on "what can happen" given "interesting details". I was looking for more of an Old Man's War novel when I picked this up so I don't think I fully appreciated the intracies of the book, but definitely a different kind of near-modern writing.
My wife makes fun of me for reading "trashy novels" like Monster Hunter International but this time she is right. The first person writing style is garbage and the political rants are really tough to get through, I actually skipped quite a few pages and didn't miss anything related to the story or the main character. I can't believe I read the whole book, I kept thinking it would get better because it was a military based novel but it didn't. If your only source of entertainment is FOX News then you will probably like this but if you think independently at all you probably won't. Pretty disjointed review I know but my brain hurts from reading this the last two weeks so it's the best I can do.
A thought provoking and entertaining read. Lays out a very plausible chain of events and responses by government that are easy to see happening. Very easy conversational style, even though he spells "hooah" wrong. As a 30 year army vet I appreciate the peripheral characters, I have served with some of those folks, both the good and the bad. Some of the plot points are a bit of a stretch from the purely military point of view, but if you are willing to accept that they are done to tell an interesting and engaging story you can forgive the author. If you trust the US government you probably won't like this book very much.
