If We Were A Movie Power of the Matchmaker edition by Kelly Oram Contemporary Romance eBooks

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. There have been books that I have loved recently, but this is one of the best. It’s been a while since I have found a book that has made me react as much as this book does. Kelly Oram crafted a story that made me laugh aloud, smile, yell at characters and want to completely cry at one point.

If We Were a Movie is written from the guy’s point of view which I loved. Most books are from the female perspective and this was a refreshing change.

Nate Anderson is a cute, charming, funny, smart and dedicated NYU freshman majoring in music and a triplet. He shares a cramped dorm room with his two wild and crazy brothers, who do not take school quite as seriously as Nate does. After his brothers antics cause Nate more trouble than he can deal with, and mess things up for him one too many times, Nate flees his housing situation in search for some freedom. He ends up taking the first available room for rent that happens to be as far from his brothers as he can get.

Jordan is a cute, funny, loyal, loving and quirky LA girl who compares everything in life to a movie. She works at the local coffee house, is majoring in film and wants to be the next Steven Spielberg. She is in search of someone to share her apartment since her roommate ran off with Jordon’s ex-boyfriend.

Like all great romantic comedies, the main characters each venture through the book with entertaining encounters and misadventures. Nate discovers that his new living arrangement has difficulties of its own and Jordan learns that things are not always what they seem.

This was a great story line featuring well developed characters that anyone would want to be friends with. The secondary characters were awesome too. Loved Nate’s brothers, Colin and Pearl. I really liked that both Nate and Jordon were slightly flawed and had to overcome challenges throughout the book. The movie and music references were so awesome and I found myself wanting to watch and listen to what was mentioned.

I wish I could give this book more than five stars! * * * * * *

If We Were A Movie Power of the Matchmaker edition by Kelly Oram Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

This is a classic heartwarming love story with few surprises that will leave a smile on your face. Despite the predictability of the storyline, author Kelly Oram has infused a unique take in correlation with movies. Movies, movies, and more movies makes this story fun and entertaining and you'll revel in each reference to old favorites and may even discover a few new ones you'll find yourself running out to watch.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review of If We Were a Movie. I was not familiar with Kelly Oram prior to reading this and was extremely pleased to stumble across this incredible author. If We Were a Movie is a story about Nate, an aspiring musician and triplet who's brothers tag along with him to college and drive him nuts. His high school girlfriend follows him there too. When he's at his lowest he meets a strange woman who puts him into contact with his new roommate, Jordan, who's a fun quirky girl who aspires to be a movie producer and relates movies to everything in life. His brothers are angry because he leaves them and his girlfriend is furious that he now has a girl living with him. That sets the stage for this incredible book.

I also want to note that I found out after the fact that this is part of Oram's Matchmaker series, however it is a fully standalone story too which was truly refreshing!
Remington Steele may be my most favorite television show ever. And Remington Steele is what came to mind when I learned one specific plot conceit in Kelly Oram's If I Were A Movie, which is that one MC in her book delights in dropping these movie references, something Mr. Steele, that great, fake detective, habitually did as he brainstormed during a case. Being a movie buff myself, I think it's a neat hook. As Jordan Kramer posits, "Everything has been done in the movies."

To pity or not pity Nate Anderson? On one hand, he's a 19-year-old musical prodigy who moved from upstate Syracuse to attend NYU. He's got a full ride, studying music composition. But the cloud to his silver lining he's the middle sibling in a set of fraternal triplets. While Nate is level-headed and takes his schooling seriously, his brothers are wild and raucous. He rooms with them in a cramped dorm room, and their crazy is getting in the way of his studying.

It was only a matter of time - in fact, one month into his frosh year - before his brothers' messing around goes too far and Nate has had it. When he hears that another student is looking for a roommate in a nearby apartment building, he's all over that. So, there's Nate, same day later, eyeballing spacious Apt. 8B, eighth floor.

Except, it turns out, his roommate is a girl. It's an issue because Nate's girlfriend of two years is bossy and manipulative and ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT okay this. Except it's a dream apartment. He can snag his own bedroom and adjoining bathroom. And he really, really would rather not live with his annoying brothers anymore. And Jordan Kramer seems a very cool, laid-back girl. Even if she starts in right away with the rampant movie references. See, she's a movie major. And a soccer fanatic. And from L.A. Ergo, her ubiquitous flip flops.

If We Were A Movie is a stand-alone novel, although it's part of the Power of the Matchmaker series, a multi-author project that has one recurring character Pearl, the matchmaker. I've read only two books in the Power of the Matchmaker series, but, based on those, I'm willing to sample the rest. After the Cinder & Ella books, If We Were A Movie is my favorite Kelly Oram. To be frank, I haven't read all - or much - of Kelly Oram's stuff. As a manly man, I don't devote much time to sappy romance reads... until recently. Seems to me, If We Were A Movie is a wee bit different from Oram's other stories I've read. For one thing, Nate isn't near as cocksure and insolent as Oram's other male protagonists (ie Brian from Cinder & Ella, Ryan from Being Jamie Baker). Another swerve is that the story is narrated strictly from Nate's perspective.

Sky is blue and water's wet and Kelly Oram can write. On the surface, her writing style is straightforward. But she's got a way with words. She effortlessly wrings an assortment of emotions out of her characters. She gets you invested in her MCs and their supporting characters. And by "invested," I don't necessarily mean that you pull for all of them. There are people inhabiting these pages that aggravated me, but, oboy, was I invested in them. Even the primary antagonist - even though she came off as a psycho beyotch - ended up as someone I felt sorry for.

Nate and Jordan start out as roommates and quickly become friends. I think the best love stories spring from when the couple start out as friends first and grow into more than. Jordan presents such a sunny personality, and I couldn't get enough of her movie references. She actually makes me want to watch - or rewatch - most of the films she brought up. Nate is the perfect foil for her, the calm to her perk.

I've become a bit obsessed with the Oramverse, such as it is, so any time a character in one of her books references other characters from her other books, I get this frisson of excitement. And I got that from this book. Kelly Oram has rapidly become one of my go-to authors. It's weird but I guess I'm a prudish dude when it comes to my reading romance novels. I don't crave the explicit smut. Which is another thing to like about Kelly Oram. She is mostly a clean writer. Oh, she dabbles in mild swear words and the occasional innuendo, and she does imply that sex goes on in her stories. But she's never going off on heaving bosoms and throbbing manhoods and such. If We Were A Movie is another one that would make a terrific movie. With Maggie Lawson as the lead. If nothing else, this book taught me how vodka and rice would come in handy should my laptop get doused.

And for those curious, the other Power of the Matchmaker book I read was Sheralyn Pratt's King of the Friend Zone (Power of the Matchmaker). And if you pick that up, you may as well also snag Pratt's The Kiss That Launched 1,000 Gifs.
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. There have been books that I have loved recently, but this is one of the best.
